The range shifter assembly should only be removed if shift parts are damaged and must be removed or if the hi-lo sliding gear (75-Fig. 131) must be renewed. Differential pinion shaft and other parts can be removed and reinstalled with range gear and shift parts in place.
Installation of detent assembly (83-Fig. 132) is very difficult and necessitates removal of final drive assembly. To remove, first refer to the paragraph 130 or 131 and remove transmission top shaft and paragraph 150 to remove right final drive. Remove pin (88-Fig. 132) and lever (89). Unbolt and remove plate (87) and 'O' ring (86), then withdraw arm shaft (85). Slide gear (75) forward, then drive pin (82) down and catch from falling using 'J' shaped wire inserted in pin from bottom.
Drive shaft (84) forward out of fork (80) and case bore. As shaft moves forward, detent ball and spring (83) will fall free. Ball may fall either into differential compartment or transmission compartment.
